Preventative Maintenance – It’s Essential!

jumper cables on battery Getting your car serviced by a mechanic is a key requirement in order to keep you on the road. While all the big mechanical work should be left to the professionals to handle, there are a few things that you can do to lower the overall cost of your car performance. This is called preventative maintenance, and is something every car owner should know how to do.

Overall Inspection

Every week you should do a general external inspection of your car. Check your lights are working; headlights, brake lights, fog lights, reverse lights, indicators. Check your tyres for bubbling or foreign objects, uneven wear, tyre pressure and tread. Run the car for a period of time and check for unusual noises like rattling or buzzing.

Check Fluid Levels

Your car requires a variety of different fluids designed to keep your car’s engine lubricated and running smoothly. Most fluids get changed when you get your car serviced, but it is a good idea to check the levels in between services. If you’re constantly having to top any up, there could be a leak somewhere that requires attention. Fluids you can easily check and top up include your transmission fluid, coolant, windscreen wiper fluid and oil. Always check your car’s manual for the specific requirements before topping anything up. If in doubt, ask your mechanic.

Check Your Battery

Unless you own a fully electric car, without a battery your car won’t run! Over time, the battery connections  can get a build up of mineral deposits,  or acid might leak out. Therefore, it is important to check for these things regularly. If there is a build up of gunk around your terminals, it can be easily removed with a battery cleaning brush and a special cleaning fluid.

Check Your Windscreen Wiper Blades

Most blades are made of rubber and will quite quickly degrade in extremely hot or wet conditions. Wiper blades are very easy to replace. It is also a great idea to regularly clean the inside of your windscreen as often as you do the outside.

Taking care of this maintenance regularly will ensure that your car stays happy in between services. The team at Sully’s Auto Car Air Conditioning Brisbane hope this has been an informative post. We hope you have had a great start to the week!
